Public Speaking Skills – Why They Matter To Your Brand

Public speaking skills career developmentPersonal branding is about more than just your mission statement, brand statement, and resume package; its about presenting YOU as a package – all of you.

We’ve all been stuck in horrid presentations and public speaking engagements, and thought about why no one had every told the speaker that they were a nightmare.  If you’re self-aware (and at this point I certainly hope you are) I’m sure you know if you suck or not.  However, if someone’s told you that you suck (and hopefully you don’t), use the criticism in your heart and co-workers whispers to embrace the personal branding motto, “show me a problem and I see solutions”.

There are four types of public speaking and we all use them daily in our work and personal lives.  They are:

  • Informative
  • Persuasive
  • Demonstrative
  • Motivational

In business we are generally informing or persuading in our speeches and presentations.  For this reason I’m going to focus on ethics in public speaking.

Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are modes of persuasion used to convince audiences.  They were coined by Aristotle as the three artistic proofs.

The Rules of Public Speaking and Presentations according The Genard Method:

  • Rule #1: Make the Audience the Center of Your Universe.
  • Rule #2: Focus on Relationships.
  • Rule #3: Give Your Purpose Most of Your Attention.
  • Rule #4: Use Your Body.
  • Rule #5: Color Your Vocal Delivery.
  • Rule #6: Get Good at Q & A—Really Good.
